Northshore on Lake Apalachia

Murphy, NC

LAKE APALACHIA

Lake Apalachia is a small and brilliant jewel nestled in the southern foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in southwestern North Carolina. Part of the Hiwassee River System, Lake Apalachia was constructed in the early 1940’s during World War II by the Tennessee Valley Authority, to help harness the river for hydroelectric power. Because the lake is used for power generation rather than flood control within the river system, it remains at a near constant level, making it one of the few TVA lakes to remain full year round.

Once dubbed “The Unknown Lake” by a local author in his 1859 geography text, Lake Apalachia is 1,100 acres, nearly ten miles in length and remains a spectacular, remote and scenic location today. Designated a wilderness waterway by the U.S. Forest Service, 2,500 acres of land surrounding the lake and its’ 31 miles of shoreline are managed as part of the Nantahala National Forest. Therefore, Lake Apalachia has very little private shoreline development, making it a truly natural setting with unparalleled visual appeal.

Because so little of Lake Apalachia’s shoreline is privately owned, relatively few visitors use the lake, allowing it to retain its pristine, wilderness appearance. Therefore, Lake Apalachia suffers none of the negative issues arising from a more populated lake setting where there is great potential for development. As such, Lake Aplachia exists today and for future generations as a unique and ideal mountain escape.
